So I almost forgot…. Changes

As a few of you are aware I left SUSE, at the start of November. The first question when someone changes roles, is always why?

I’ve written this note a few times in my career, and there is certainly differences between these changes… but all of them since I stopped delivering newspapers come down to the same thing.

I am going to a new role, not leaving the old one, and at it’s heart I think this is an important difference. Yes sometimes I’ve been lucky enough to receive a package :-), but when I look at these changes, the time has always been good. SUSE has been on a rough ride, for the company and it’s people, but it was also a great opportunity for me (look at my titles to see how wide the role was!).

That said everyone wants to hear something specific about Cray Research, IBM, Red Hat/IBM, or SUSE… so here’s my thoughts.

I’ve left each of these roles because the job I had and what is important to me diverged. While it’s not very gossip worthy that’s the truth.

No, I’m not done with ‘Open-Source’ it’s been a core element of my career since working for the University of Minnesota.

I’m also grateful, … For the people and the organizations. With one single exception during my consulting career, I’ve never worked for an employer who I’d rather not have worked for, (and it’s probably not who you think if you know my career).

So what is next?

  • I’m working with a couple startup boards (none are public yet).

  • I’m looking forward to an advisory board position with a large organization.

  • Classwork and catching up on my reading, my apologies for all the earlier reviews I’ve been slow with I’m almost done with them all…

    • I think I’ll write about some of the classwork soon.

  • Of course I’m looking for another transformational role.

Should you ever need anything, you know how to reach me (below, and my cell number has not changed in the last 30 years), I would welcome the opportunity to help.
